Author's Statement

 

Why do genocides occur? Many people have attempted to answer this question. Unfortunately there is no clear answer, there are many factors that contribute to making a genocide happen. The biggest factor is also the simplest answer to that question; Genocides occur because the soldiers are more than willing to carry out the orders handed down to them by their superior officers. We have seen this time and time again, genocide after genocide, the perpetrators kill, torture, and dehumanize their victims under their own will. The choices that these soldiers make directly impact the outcome of the genocide specifically the number of victims murdered and the way in which they were murdered. For too long the international community has focused on the high ranking officials and the way they manipulated their masses. The high ranking officials are branded as the main perpetrators of genocide, however the truth is that the lower ranked soldiers or "ordinary men" are the one's responsible for the killing of millions of people. The pieces of this multi-genre project will reflect the choices that Serbian soldiers made throughout the Bosnian Genocide, the choices that would ultimately wipe out over 100,000 Muslim men, children, and women...
