Omarska Concentration Camp, 1994
These last couple of days have been unbearable, death has never sounded so appealing. After witnessing and experiencing all of the things I have, one would not want to live with the memory of what occured within the walls of this camp. The soldiers of this camp were the true definition of evil, they showed no sympathy towards anyone. To them we werent even humans, we were just another target, we were being eterminated as if we were parisites. I along with hundreds of men were sperated from the women, we had no idea were we were going but noone dared to ask any questions. The soldiers werre ruthless, any outburst from any of the inmates would result in enless beatings and even death. Along the way we occasionaly stopped at the comand of the soldiers. They made us dig huge trenches in the smoltering heat, we were deprived of water for many hours. Those who fell to exaughstion were shot on the spot by the Serbian soldiers, their bodies were thrown into the ditch. Once we were done digging, I along with approximately eighty other men were seperated from the group, the soldiers forced us to watch as they oppened fire upon the rest of the men, bodies upon bodies fell into the tranches, boys ranging from all ages were killed as well. After all of the bodies were lying in the trenches the remaining men along with myself were forced to burry them. We burried men and children most of who we knew from neighboring towns, we were then forced to continue walking as if nothing had happened. When we finally arrived at Omarska, we were told to hand over any valuable possesions, anybody who refused would be shot. After almost 3 days we were given our first meal which consisted of molded bread and rotten potatoes. That is what our lives were for the following months to come, torture, unending work, scarce food rations and death. Death was all around us, many including myself no longer feared death, infact we welcomed it. The soldiers knew how to keep our spirits down, they beat us on a daily basis, the blows were relentless. Our pleads of mercy were futile, the soldiers laughed at our struggles to survive. They dehumanized us in evry way imaginable, they forced us to rape other men and occasionaly the soldiers brought young girls from the women's section and they forced us to rape them continuosly until they passed out. I will never forget the look of satisfaction on the faces of those dispicable soldiers. The presence of the soldiers made everybody in the room cower in fear, we were no longer independent, our fates lied in the hands of another human being we were willing to do anything in order to survive and we did no matter how humiliating it was. The killings continued relentlessly for weeks until our camp was liberated, somehow I was spared death but the memory of these events and the faces of those discpicaable soldiers will live with me until my death.
