Image Analysis
In the years of the Bosnian Genocide thousands upon thousands of bosnian men, women and boys were executed, and humiliated in the most brutal way imaginable. The image above displays a Serbian soldier pointing his assault rifle at a helpless Bosnian person. The Bosnian displayed in the image does not have a face, it only has the insignia of the muslim religion: There is a purpose to that. The soldiers who carried out all of the atrocities had no mercy or sympathy towards their victim. The phrase in the thought bubble of the soldier says, “ Just following orders.” Genocides occur because of the choices that are made, the choices that these particular soldiers made was to blindly follow orders which lead to the brutal murder of more than 100,000 men and women. The faceless victim symbolizes that the Serbian soldiers only had one target, the muslims. Muslims were not viewed as people throughout this genocide, for the soldiers they were just another burden to get rid off. The title of this image The Unknown Victim represents the millions of people who were killed, and due to mass graves and other systematic killing techniques there were hundreds upon thousands of unidentified people who would never be heard off again.
